How to organise a digital question bank teachers will actually reuse
A question bank becomes valuable when teachers can trust its structure. More questions do not automatically create a better library; consistent tags, ownership and review make the collection reusable.
Choose a small, stable taxonomy
Start with the dimensions teachers genuinely use when building a paper: exam or curriculum, subject, chapter, topic and question type. Add difficulty only when the team has a shared definition for it.
Free-text variants such as ‘Physics’, ‘PHY’ and ‘physics’ fragment filters. Prefer controlled options for fields that drive discovery.
Separate shared and organisation-owned content
A shared library and an institute’s private questions serve different purposes. Preserve that distinction in permissions and in the interface so teachers know what they can edit, reuse or share.
Keep structured questions together
Passage-based and matrix questions lose meaning when their components are treated as unrelated rows. Store group identity and order so the question remains coherent in the bank and on the final paper.
Review for reuse, not only correctness
A reusable question needs correct content, clean formatting, a dependable answer, useful tags and any required diagram. Create a lightweight review loop and fix repeated taxonomy problems at the source.
